The Daytona 100 is a 100 mile point to point road ultramarathon that starts in Atlantic Beach and ends in Ponce Inlet. Original weather predictions were generally mild with clear skies. We saw no rain over the race days and while many complained it was hot during the day, it was not nearly as bad as The Keys.
This was my first 100 mile race – unlike my first 100 mile race, this training plan included lots of big mile weeks, with multiple weeks spent in the 100 mile range.
What Went Well:
- Crewing:
- I was crewed by my father and partner, which has now become the typical crew composition. They were pretty aware of what I needed at this point, and the crewing could not have been better. As usual, they made particular changes through the evening, especially when I was in Daytona as the bars let out.
- Clothing:
- I ran Nike AeroSwift short paired with an On Performance-T. Overnight I threw on my Patagonia Houdini jacket. As usual, I used the Janji W’s Groundwork Pace Sports bra which has become a staple in my running wardrobe overall.
- I used my favorite running hat for this event, the GADIEMKENSD.
- I wore my Salomon ADV Skin 12 for this with 2 soft flasks up front and a bladder in the back,.
- I wore my old Petzl Actik Core Headlamp and brought my Kogalla light bar. I never turned on my headlamp and relied almost entirely on my light bar over the night
- Fatigue/Injuries:
- Other runners frequently told me how “fresh” I looked (though I didn’t always feel it).
- I had no blisters through this event (a major win)
- I felt almost no fatigue during this race, I could have run for days
- Pacing:
- I didn’t go out super fast, maintaining a 11-12 min mile over the first 30…so I never felt particularly gassed. This was way improved over my race in the Keys where I went out way too fast.
- I incorporated some walking time when it got warm during the day, which helped keep my heart rate and temperature down. It also led to me feeling fresher, longer
- Nutrition:
- It may have took some time, but I know what to eat now. Bobo Bites, Applesauce, and maybe some gummies. It works perfectly.
- I mixed in some “real food”, bananas and oranges, which made for a nice change as well. Fresh fruit is really a winner during an ultra
- Hydration:
- I drank Untapped Maple Tea and Skratch during this race. I like both and they worked just fine.
- Shoes:
- I ran Saucony Endorphin Speeds the entire time. And they were perfect.
What Went Poorly:
- Watch:
- My Coros Apex had the GPS navigation on and died at 80 miles. I think it only lasts 30 hours. Not long enough. Fuck
- Race Organization:
- My biggest complaint. The bibs were paper and ripped through. The buckles were cheap (yes, I understand that races are using wooden buckles, but these were so cheap I could see the glue in mine), The aid stations were not great. There was no chip timing. It seems like the owner really cheaped out on this event. If it wasn’t so easy to run (because its close to my house), I would never run it again.
I would have finished in under 24 hours, however, I was running through Daytona Beach and getting a lot of cat calls and inappropriate comments made toward me so I stayed with a runner who was accompanied by her husband. I quickly learned she was having major stomach issues and was considering dropping with only about 18 miles left in the race. I walked almost the entire remaining miles with her to see to it that she finished.
Overall, this was a good race for me (25:06:00) and seems like an easy race to PR. I came in 25th, and was 11th female, and second in my age group. I would run it again, but only for the proximity to my home.
